Talking on Video About Brian Solis Book Engage!

Engage! by Brian solisI made this video yesterday, chatting about Brian Solis’ book Engage! (the Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web).

The video is by no means perfect – the lighting is poor, there is wind noise in the mike, etc etc. But the book is excellent – chock full of information and ideas about social media

I see the book Engage! as a must-have for anyone who has a professional or business interest in operating effectively in the new web environment. And as I say on the video, I am about to start reading it again.

If You Don’t Want to Have to Explain Social Media, Share This Video

Social Media Revolution updated: fresh statistics, new graphics

How do you explain social media adequately? Or, probably more importantly, explain why it is important for everyone to understand what has happened and is happening with social media?

For a workshop last year, my colleague Michael Rees who has a vast amount of knowledge of social media – being a professor probably helps – chose to lead off with a showing of the video “Social Media Revolution” by Erik Qualman, author of the book Socialnomics, subtitled “how social media transforms the way we live and do business”.

The video was very well received. I realised it was a much more effective way of showing what is happening than for Michael or I to spend a much longer time showing lots of slides and talking a lot.

But things move very fast in the world of social media, so it’s good to see an updated version of the video, titled Social Revolution 2 (Refresh).

If you want to pin down some of the statistics that flash by in the video, the author has kindly listed them in his blog post on the subject.

Sure there will be situations where a longer, more in-depth explanation is required. But even then, the video can be an excellent discussion starter.

Although, social media being the contested area it is, I would not be surprised if some people have other views on that!

How to Make a Promo Video With Those Still Shots on Your Hard Drive

As I post more to this blog, I’m generally finding it easier to decide whether a particular post will more appropriately go here or to my Thinking Home Business blog.

Sometimes it’s a line ball. For example yesterday when I was ready to post about experimenting with making a short promotional video on Animoto. I decided on Thinking Home Business. You can read about the background and process of my tinkering with Animoto at Here’s a Quick Way to Have Your Own Promotional Video.

If you just want to see the non-award-winning result of the tinkering (it’s less than half a minute to watch), here it is:

I love technology that I can use without having to learn a new language, study a manual, or call up a techie friend. This Animoto thing fits the bill.
