Twitter can be great for a business. One issue I've run into is channel confusion. I've mixed channels now (i.e. two businesses in a single twitter account) and that's not so good. Twitter is at its best when you have a clear message and theme.

Ian

Thanks for the comment.

If you take "addictive" in the sense expressed by the television presenter I quoted, that "everyone who goes on Twitter gets addicted to it" I don't resile from the "myth" label: it's clearly not universally addictive. (There is another whole discussion about whether "myth" necessarily and always means "untrue".)

I would also argue that there are more uses for Twitter than just being where your customers are. I have customers who are not on Twitter and I am able to be of better service to them because of the learnings and connections that come to me through participation in various conversations on Twitter.

Hmmm - I'm not sure that "Twitter is addictive" is a myth - it certainly is for me.

For me Twitter's one of those things that's a complete waste of time for some businesses (at the moment) but can be incredibly valuable for others. The key is not to either dismiss it out of hand or to unthinkingly adopt it - without figuring out (and experimenting) whether it will work for your specific business.

A lot of it comes down to whether you target customers are Twitter users or not. If they are, then it's just like many other channels: you've got to be where your customers are.
