As to your question about the order of eating and talking - we do have a session in the book titled &quot;Food is the Sky&quot; (a Chinese saying).  Eating in China has such significant cultural and business importance that one simply cannot ignore. 

May I clarify though that the &quot;direction&quot; you got from the Chinese next to you sounded more like a &quot;student&quot; thing, rather than a &quot;Chinese&quot; thing.  Personally I have been to many banquets (both business and social) that are mainly for &quot;the talking&quot;.  People pay more attention to the conversation, and to bonding with other guests than the dishes what are being served.
